Night Guide / Worth keeping

Caffeine-free at night:
a guide to the warm cup.

You want something warm before sleep, but coffee and tea both bring caffeine with them. Inspice, an aromatics brand from Kanazawa, sets out how to drink by the hour of the day, and what to reach for at night.

The short version.
  • Chai is built on black tea, so it contains caffeine. Enjoy it in the morning and the afternoon.
  • At night, move to vetiver tea. It uses no tea leaves at all — herbs only, and no caffeine.
  • On a night that calls for something sweet, make the sugar-free the cocoa weak and bitter-edged.
By the Clock

Drink through the day by scent.

Not going without — switching over. Know which cup suits which hour, and the evening gets freer.

Morning

Start with chai

Twelve spices on a black tea base. Three minutes of CHAInstant in the microwave lights the day. (Contains caffeine.)

Afternoon

A dense cup, and a pause

The bitter-edged the cocoa, or chai simmered in a pan. A deep breath between tasks.

Night

Switch to caffeine-free

From here, vetiver tea. A cup of herbs rather than tea leaves, to close the day slowly.

What is Vetiver

What is vetiver tea?

Vetiver is the root of a grass, long called the calming herb for its deep, settled scent. Inspice Vetiver Tea is a trio built on that root. No.1 layers echinacea and butterfly pea over it — blue stillness, and the cup turns a clear blue when you pour. No.2 is cardamom and yerba buena: new green, and bright with it. Neither uses tea leaves, so both are caffeine-free.

For the Night

Three choices for the evening.

the cocoa contains a trace of caffeine, from the cacao itself. On a night when you want none at all, take vetiver tea.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Can I not drink chai at night?
It is built on black tea, so it contains caffeine. People differ in how much they notice it, but before bed we would suggest switching to vetiver tea.
How do I brew vetiver tea?
Pour hot water over the bag and wait, unhurried. The bag is Soilon, a plant-derived material that sheds no microplastics.
Is the blue colour added?
No. It is the natural colour of the butterfly pea flower. A small moment of theatre, and only in No.1.
Is it suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Advice on taking herbs varies with the person and the situation. Please ask your doctor.
